5 Key tools in the battle against the spread of COVID-19

As COVID-19 continues to spread, millions of people are contracting the virus. While the majority of people will not require in-patient medical care if they contract coronavirus, a significant number of patients will need intensive medical treatment in order to survive.

In the battle against coronavirus, a wide range of tools is being used. To find out how the world is responding to the pandemic, take a look at these 5 key tools being used to fight COVID-19:

1. Face masks

Face masks have caused some controversy amongst the general public, but there is a large amount of evidence to prove they’re effective at reducing the spread of the virus. When people wear a suitable face mask when they’re in public, it’s far less likely that they will spread COVID-19 to others. By reducing transmissions, face masks are playing a major role in overcoming the threat of coronavirus.

2. Powered air-purifying respirators

A PAPR is an excellent way to reduce the spread of most viruses and they are particularly effective when it comes to protecting people from COVID-19. A powered air-purifying respirator provides powerful filtration, which removes harmful contaminants from the air. By doing so, the person wearing the PAPR is not exposed to contaminated air.

Typically worn by healthcare workers, PAPRs are an essential form of personal protective equipment and are critical in terms of protecting medical professionals from the harm that long-term exposure to COVID-19 can cause.

3. Electronic tracing systems

The symptoms of coronavirus can vary dramatically, so you won’t necessarily know if you have the virus. Some people will be asymptomatic throughout, which means they won’t display any symptoms at all. Conversely, some people who contract the virus will experience a number of serious symptoms, including breathing difficulties, debilitating fatigue, and lung damage.

As people can transmit the disease before developing symptoms, they may inadvertently put other people in danger of contracting COVID-19. With electronic tracing systems, however, people can be notified if they have been in contact with someone who has subsequently tested positive for the virus. This enables them to isolate in accordance with the current guidelines and take a test to confirm whether or not they have contracted the virus.

4. Testing kits

Some of the symptoms of COVID-19 can be confused with other illnesses. This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to have access to accurate testing kits. A confirmed diagnosis allows people to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus if they are infected.

Furthermore, accurate testing enables scientists, researchers, and government officials to monitor the spread of the virus. When developing strategies to manage the threat of COVID-19, it’s essential to have up to date information regarding how many people are infected and what the rate of transmission is. By gaining this data via accurate testing, officials can implement appropriate measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 and protect the population.

5. Hand sanitizer

It may not be the most high-tech tool, but it’s certainly one that is critical in the battle against COVID-19. Frequent hand washing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer is highly effective when it comes to reducing the spread of coronavirus. By practicing enhanced hand hygiene, you can protect yourself and others by reducing the likelihood of transmitting the virus.

Will there be a COVID-19 vaccine?

Scientists have been working on a vaccine since the threat of COVID-19 first became apparent. While there will inevitably be a vaccine at some point in the future, it’s unclear when it will be available. Until members of the public have access to an effective vaccine, additional measures need to be taken to reduce the threat of coronavirus. Fortunately, the range of tools being employed is helping to reduce transmission rates and limiting the spread of COVID-19.
