In an era where every day is marked by the use of masks, unlocking smartphones that use facial recognition has become difficult and cumbersome, especially for iPhone users. To address this issue, Apple might just start listening to its users who complain of the unlocking issue, and likewise, the company might include an in-screen fingerprint sensor for its upcoming smartphones.
An article on the Wall Street Journal claimed that Apple has been experimenting with an in-display fingerprint sensor and it may get a permanent place in the upcoming iPhones which will also have the Face ID hardware in addition.
“Apple has been working on in-screen fingerprint technology and has considered including both Touch ID and Face ID on the same device, two former Apple employees told me. While they couldn’t confirm the company’s plans, other reports, including one from Bloomberg, say Apple is testing in-screen fingerprint sensors in its next iPhone,” – Wall Street Journal Report.
The report also reveals that the smartphone giant is also experimenting with an optical in-screen fingerprint sensor, which apparently is more reliable than the ultra-sensing in-display fingerprint sensor used primarily in smartphones such as Samsung’s Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S21 series. However, there are a few things that need to be checked before this new inclusion gets a green signal. Any iPhones can only get an in-display fingerprint sensor only if they match the accuracy and speed standards Apple set with the physical Touch ID sensor available on the previous iPhone models, and a few newer models, such as the iPhone SE 2020, iPads, and MacBooks.
Previously there had been a few rumors that Apple might use a physical side-mounted fingerprint sensor for its upcoming iPhones. Notwithstanding the inclusion of the in-display fingerprint sensor, Apple will retain the Face ID especially because it facilitates various AR features such as Memojis.
