Nintendo Switch and Call of Duty dominate US game sales in 2020

US consumers spent a record-breaking amount on video game hardware, content, and accessories in 2020. NDP Group analyzed that a total of $56.9 billion was spent in 2020, which is 27% higher than what was spent in 2019. Nintendo Switch and Call of Duty came out on top among the video games.

Nintendo Switch was the bestselling hardware platform in units and dollars in 2020; PS5, on the other hand was the second best-selling console of the year in dollar sales and the PS4 was the second best-selling console based on units sold.

As for games, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the best selling game of 2020. It should not come as a surprise to anyone that the Call of Duty franchise has had the title for 12 years straight now, counting 2020. Indeed, the gaming franchise made a new record as being the best-selling title in the US for the 12th consecutive year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which was launched the previous year in 2019, was 2020’s second best-selling game. Animal Crossing New Horizons, Madden NFL 21, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla follow Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Animal Crossing New Horizons enjoyed the highest physical dollar sales for a Nintendo published game in a calendar year since 2010’s Wii Fit Plus.

For December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077, which was launched on December 10, was December’s second best-selling game and 2020’s 19th best-selling title. There had been a few complaints regarding the game, and the developers are working on fixing a few issues.

2020’s sixth best-selling game is Sony’s third best-selling game called the Last of Us Part II. Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War which was launched in 2018 follows the Last of Us Part II.

Many analysts have predicted that for 2021 Nintendo Switch could become the best-selling console of 2021.
