Samsung Display will be the exclusive supplier for Apple for its next generation of iPhones. As of now, Samsung is now responsible for supplying Apple with Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels. The new OLED panels are to be used in two high-end iPhone models.
The team at Samsung is calling the new OLED technology the Adaptive Frequency or hybrid oxide and polycrystalline silicon (HOP).
The high-end iPhones being discussed here is Apple’s next generation of iPhones, the iPhone 13. The upcoming iPhones will use the South Korean tech company’s Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistors (TFT) OLED panes.
The next-generation iPhones will come in four models, and all of them will feature the OLED panes. Furthermore, the two higher variants will use LTPO OLED panels that also support a high refresh rate, up to 120Hz.
Apple is planning on using the LTPO OLED panels for the entire 2022 iPhone lineup which means this could also be a massive push for Samsung Display. Alongside, Apple has also taken the decision to take on LG Display as one of its LTPO OLED panel suppliers. Even last year, Samsung was the only company licensed to supply Apple OLED panels for its iPhone 12 series, and the same technology is expected to be used in the upcoming new generation iPhones, the iPhone 13 lineup.
Previously, the displays for the iPhones were jointly provided by Samsung and LG Display, but now it looks like this year LG Display will not be supplying the LTPO OLED panels for iPhones.
However, LG Display is working on further developing the display technology and is hoping that it will be able to provide display screens to Apple in the year 2022. Notably, Samsung Display has also supplied LTPO OLED panels for the first time through the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, back in 2020.
