Elon Musk reveals when ‘Tesla Roadster’ will ship

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO has finally given a timeline about the company’s upcoming Tesla Roadster. According to a tweet by the CEO on Wednesday, he is very confident and thinks with all things being equal, the Tesla Roadster should finally ship by 2023. Taking to his official Twitter account, he says the long wait should be entirely blamed on the current supply chain shortages. According to Elon Musk, even if the company had 17 new products, it would not matter a lot, after all, seeing as 2021 has been ‘super crazy’ with regards to supply chain shortages.

But from his projections, and hoping that 2022 comes with no major dramas of its own, he is of a firm belief that the new Tesla Roadster should ship in 2023.

Recall that the 2nd generation Roadster valued at $200,000, was first announced by Elon Musk back in November 2017 during a splashy event. It was during that announcement that he revealed how the base model could amazingly go from 0 to 60 in less than two seconds (1.9 seconds to be precise). He also made mention of the fact that the Roadster would come with a 200kWh battery pack and per every charge, would have a 620-mile range.

Production was initially slated to begin in 2020 but was later postponed to 2022 during an announcement made by Musk in January 2020. The change in schedule would be particularly sad for those who may have deposited some amount of cash for the beast of a car.

According to sources, Tesla takes a $50,000 deposit for the base model and a staggering $250,000 for the Founders Series model.

Although according to what Musk said during an earnings call in July, Tesla has made some amazing changes like substituting new chips into its cars and rewriting software to support them due to the global chip shortage, there remain some hurdles to scale before the release of the new Roadster. And somehow, it’s not only the Roadster that is being delayed, the Tesla Cybertruck’s production has also been delayed till next year.
