Arguably one of the most successful products of Xiaomi, the MIUI is coming with another great feature. As already is, the most recent product in the series which is the MIUI 12.5 is doing well. The Enhanced Edition of 12.5 is already on its way to the international market too while MIUI 13 is slated for release by late June next year.
In the past, one way to be sure about a potential MIUI feature is the beta channel, especially if the feature reaches the stage of beta testing. That is why it is now very certain that Xiaomi is adding a new feature called the MIUI Pure Mode.
This feature will address security issues that are quite common with malicious Android apps.
According to Xiaomi statistics, about 40% of apps that are installed by the default MIUI installer do not pass the company’s own security audit. And at least 10% of the said percentage are classified as security risks by the audit. This is exactly what Pure Mode hopes to address. By default, Pure Mode will disable sideloading on APKs and also background installation of apps. This will ensure that no app is installed without the user’s consent and knowledge.
Xiaomi also clarified further by saying users can decide whether to re-enable sideloading. It is just a setting that users can switch on or off. At the moment, Beta applications for Pure Mode are already being processed in China, and by September 6, test packages will be circulated. A thousand approved devices will be tested daily for the next 5 days. A fairly small beta test, if one is to say.
Xiaomi is yet to reveal exactly what the company is planning to do with Pure Mode at this time. There are speculations regarding whether the feature will be part of the soon-to-be-released MIUI 13 or if it will even be made available beyond the borders of China.
For now, fingers remain crossed as we wait patiently to see how things unfold.
