Google adds a new “Focus Time” feature in Google Calendar


Google announced a new feature called “Focus Time” which will help the users maintain their key time period in their schedule. Google describes the new function as “To reduce distractions while you work, you can schedule a focus time event in Google Calendar.” It also has the ability to block meetings automatically so that personal or other affairs do not get meddled with. The users can choose the “Concentration Period” tab from the type list.

Like adding an event to any calendar, the users can add a date and time including other details pertaining to the event. The users have control over when they receive the notification about related items to the added event on the calendar, how they want to be displayed on the calendar.

Google explains the addition of the new feature as: “In the past year, everyone’s work environment has undergone a great change, and more chats and meetings have been arranged to occupy personal working hours.” The new “Focus Time” will work to make it easier for everyone to manage their working time efficiently. As to who can use this new feature, Google has mentioned, “To schedule a focus time event, you must have a work or school account. If you can’t find the focus time option, it may not be available for your organization.”

To schedule Focus Time, the Google support page mentions, users need to follow the following steps:

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. Click the time you want to schedule focus time.
  3. At the top of the event, click Focus time.
  4. Select when you want your event to begin and end.
  5. Click Save.

However, the users can reject any meetings that may overlap during the focus period. As of now, this new feature of the Google Calendar is available on the Google Workspace commercial standard/enhanced version, enterprise standard/enhanced version, education basic/teaching/learning upgrade version, non-profit organization version, and education standard/enhanced version customers. But hopefully, Google will bring this feature to G Suite Basic/Business Edition customers very soon.
